MARCH 4, 2015

10:30am. Meeting with Taboo from Black Eyed Peas!

Stevie came and picked me up early, as it was a long ride out to Taboo’s home. It was a beautiful house, of course. As we pulled up Stevie said, “look what you get when you work hard,” then added, “and you gotta get lucky too.”

We were greeted at the door by Taboo’s manager, David “Deja” Larn. I learned later they had been friends and played music together since high school. He took us through the house to the studio where Taboo welcomed us in.

For the next couple of hours we talked about my career and his career. Then we listened to some of the new album.

He said he could feel “my passion and energy!” in the music. The best thing he shared with me though, and which is going to inspire me for a long time, is what he had to say about perseverance.

“I was living at my Mom and her boyfriend Julio’s, sleeping on the couch for years, even after I had a record contract. It took me ten years to get successful. Then with one song, Where is the Love, everything clicked. That song changed my life in six months. Then that hit led to another, and another, and another. I knew, and Deja knew, in the beginning that you have to be in it for the long run, and that hard work and determination would make it pay off.”

Take away.

And whatever happens, don’t give up.
