My cousin Candace had me play at our family potlatch. My initial reaction was inferiority. I mean, these are amazing dance groups that perform and pass on cultural knowledge through ceremony and I run around singing about ex-boyfriends and the sea. Candace said that I had to play because its our family’s potlatch and I have something to offer. Its my job as a Haida woman to share my gift. That put me in my place and booked a plane ticket the same day. I played and saw the impact it on all the kids. I totally belonged there.
